2017 VET Students of the Year
Lachlan Rye 2016 Illawarra VET Student of the Year
Brett Willims 2015 Illawarra VET Student of the Year
“I first chose to do the TVET course Animal Studies as a part of my HSC because it would give me a better insight and more experience in the veterinary workplace in pursuit of my dream to become a veterinarian. My work placement was the best part of the course as I got to experience the practical side and ‘behind the scenes’ action of two different veterinary hospitals working with small and large animals. One of the highlights was obtaining my job as a veterinarian assistant at Bomaderry Vets, where I have worked for the past year and a half and done lots of interesting things (including x-rays, assisting with farm call outs, and caring for wildlife).
Being nominated for the VET Student of the Year Award for Animal Studies was a great opportunity and definitely helped me with my applications for university, of which I even had the chance to attend an interview for Vet Science at CSU in Wagga, which I did really well in, but unfortunately my ATAR was just not good enough to get in (by 3 points!). So now I am at the University of Wollongong, studying a Bachelor of Science in Conservation Biology and working at Bomaderry Vet Hospital. I am hoping to transfer into vet science at the end of the year or do it as a post-grad degree.
The TVET course played a major role in getting me to where I am now and will continue to help me achieve my goal as a vet as I had gained many skills required in that industry, as well as having lots of fun on the way!”
